RSS Readers
Quentin Christensen
Hi everyone, I found an interesting post on working with RSS feeds - Here's the article for anyone interested: https://clivethompson.medium.com/how-i-use-rss-to-rewild-my-attention-7731267a40d8 So, of course the first question I got asked in reply is: What is a good RSS reader for Windows which works with NVDA? And I realised I hadn't looked into it for awhile. I know you can use Outlook (and I included the steps in the Microsoft Outlook with NVDA module). But what else do people use? Kind regards Quentin. Hi,
I use Thunderbird as an RSS reader and it is reasonably easy to
use with NVDA. Le 08/02/2023 à 11:06, Quentin

Hi, Quentin! I also use Thunderbird for mail and RSS, and even didn't try something other. TB works very good with NVDA for me.

I'll put in another vote for Thunderbird. Having RSS and email living together is super convenient. I would be lost without it. Plus the RSS function works decently for podcasts as well. Its email-like interface lets you treat each episode as if it were an attachment that you can save as you go. You can also see whatever episode summaries are provided and not download the ones you don't want. The only apparent shortcoming is the lack of support for password protected feeds. If there's a way around that, I don't know it. Steve On 2023-02-08 9:23 a.m.,

Thunderbird does this. I just started using it for that purpose.

I have to also add that I use the read feeds add on rss reader as a podcatcher, since most of those I've tried fail on one sort of podcast or another.

I certainly find that feed reader pretty good of course I prefer to look at it manually, there is nothing more bothersome than half a dozen feeds popping up from the all singing podcatcher when you are trying to do something else! Quentin, is this module part of the material that is available for purchase, or is the “module” found someplace else? Thanks, Laurie M.

Hi Laurie, Yes, it is part of the Microsoft Outlook with NVDA module from our shop here: https://www.nvaccess.org/product/microsoft-outlook-training-for-nvda-ebook/ And thanks everyone for your suggestions! I got a few more from the folks on Mastodon too so keep an eye out for an article in In-Process later today or tomorrow! Kind regards Quentin.

But it seems that there is no rss reader that has sync function that support nvda? Thunderbird is good, and it is also what I am using now, but we cannot sync the rss subscription with any other device, unless you do it manually.

Hi William, Robert on Mastodon, suggested the following: "To sync feeds across devices, I have 2 recommendations. Miniflux. Very keyboard friendly, and most accessible. You can manage it yourself or pay for them to manage it for you. https://miniflux.app/hosting.html Feedbin. No ads, and second best when it comes to accessibility. There are some accessibility issues though, but they can be overcome. It's mostly logos not having alt text and some search edit fields are not labeled, but still, it has no ads, and is cheap. https://feedbin.com/ Some Blind people use the old reader but I found it to be inaccessible and just not good, kind of bloated, but still, it's worth linking to. https://theoldreader.com/pages/tour " On Thu, Feb 9, 2023 at 2:07 PM William <xsuper.sillyx@...> wrote:

Yep, I use Miniflux. I'll donate a free instance for the people
who are willing to use it. On 2/9/2023 10:59 AM, Quentin

Hi,
I am also using MiniFlux and have my feeds synced across several devices, e.g. my iPhone, a Mac and my Linux box which I am using for work. On Windows there is no accessible client so the webinterface of MiniFlux has to be used, but on other plattforms some client software is available. The webinterface is simple and very accessible and many things can be done via keyboard shortcuts. Cheers, Schoepp |

Thank you very much, I will look into MiniFlux this weekend. Quentin Christensen 於 9/2/2023 13:29

I use Raven Reader. It has a very simple interface and is quite accessible with
screen readers. it can also show the the original webpage of
articles without ads. -- Suhas

Tethered by gravity, in their final seconds together the black holes course through thousands of revolutions about their eventual point of contact, churning up space and time until they crash and merge into one bigger black hole, an event more powerful than any since the origin of the universe, outputting more than a trillion times the power of a billion Suns. The black holes collide in complete darkness. None of the energy exploding from the collision comes out as light. I use Feedly. The web interface is very accessible. With the pro version you can also receive newsleters in a direct email in Feedly, and read Twitter and Reddit as well. It has some features with artificial intelligence to filter out things you don't want to read. To read from my iPhone I use Newsify, which syncs with Feedly and is also very accessible. I recommend giving it a try. El sáb, 11 feb 2023 a las 1:43, Suhas D (<ignisdraco7@...>) escribió:

Hello,
oh, what an interesting topic! ok, the best rss reader/client in my opinion has been enbeded in IE, which is now defunct. so when IE was retired, I switched to Edge and installed extention called Feedbro. this extention is available also for other popular browsers. Yes, the weekness is that I cannot synchronise feeds between devices and nest folders (make folders in folders), but generally I like it. I tested some others extention, but they had more accessibility related issues than Feedbro. regards Jožef |
