Suggestion get help menu
hurrikennyandopo ...
Hi,
From time to time I see people ask questions on the different email groups for nvda, synthesizers, add_ons, training material etcetera. I have seen Quentin flick up training material quite a few times on the list for new users. There may be other questions asked as well. A few of the questions are answered on the get help page at NVACCESS. page. I was going through the help menus and there is nothing there unless you go to the NVACCESS website, locate the get help section, and see what is there. People might just flick on a copy of nvda and may never go to the NVACCESS website. So they will (or might not) come across that page at all. I am guessing it would make more sense to have a menu called get help (under the help section of NVDA), where it would be much quicker for people to get help for NVDA. There, they can find training material, phone support etcetera. The page I am referring to is https://www.nvaccess.org/get-help/ I have also seen questions about coming from another screen reader, what is it called in NVDA etcetera. That sort of stuff could be linked to that page. I think there was a section called other resources. The information is there just fragmented and not easy to find. I am trying to look at it from a new users perspective. I am also looking at the welcome dialogue when you first download NVDA. It is your first point of contact or maybe second. Could a get help link come from there? Currently it says: Most commands for controlling NVDA require you to hold down the NVDA key while pressing other keys. By default, the numpad Insert and main Insert keys may both be used as the NVDA key. You can also configure NVDA to use the CapsLock as the NVDA key. Press NVDA+n at any time to activate the NVDA menu. From this menu, you can configure NVDA, get help and access other NVDA functions. The link could go here. The rewrite of the same information is written below. This is just an idea! Welcome Most commands for controlling NVDA require you to hold down the NVDA key while pressing other keys. The NVDA key can be either the insert key, the extended insert key or the caps lock key. Press the NVDA key you choose + letter N at any time to activate the NVDA menu. From this menu, you can configure NVDA, get help and access other NVDA functions. To get help with NVDA please go to https://www.nvaccess.org/get-help/ What do other people think about putting a get-help menu (under the help section) in NVDA, to make it easier to find the information page??? Let me know your thoughts! Just throwing an idea around. I think it is something that would be useful. Gene NZ |

Gene, This is a good idea. It would be worth having links to either the get help page, or some of the resources on there such as training material and the list of email groups. It would be worth copying this to an issue if you are interested. Quentin. On Tue, Feb 7, 2023 at 9:11 AM hurrikennyandopo ... <hurrikennyandopo@...> wrote: Hi, --

Hi Quentin
I will do a ticket or what ever it is called to have it point towards that page. It makes sence when people ask questions on training, voices etc etc. I will put into the ticket why it still points to NVACCESS but a new user may have questions want to even check out he user guide etc. Another thing I would actually add to that page is the NVDA certification page for people who are new to nvda and may require help from a certified extert. The link to the page is https://certification.nvaccess.org/ Gene nz |

Hi Quentin,
I saw last night, when I went to do a ticket, that you had opened one. Thankyou! My computer processor/motherboard took a dive so I changed the computer for another one and had to set it back up. I was dreading what I had to do as the interface has changed. I added a comment to the ticket (and hopefully it was clear enough) basically, in the help menu of nvda, have a get help menu that points to the get-help page on NVACCESS. It has a lot of the information a new user etc would need.
I do think also, that the nvda certified experts link should be added to the get-help page; so that when a person goes down the get help page, they can also see if there is an nvda expert in their area to get help.
I see Shawn has commented. Does that mean you guys will have a chat? I did also see some thing about moving some menus?
What would be wrong with it perhaps instead of it saying "help nvaccess" and going to the main site, that it could say "nvaccess get help" and point to the get help page?! (or something along those lines)? That way it still says NvAccess, and people, then if they also want to poke around later, they can when more used to nvda.

Gene, My apology, I meant to come back here and mention I'd created it, and then.... got distracted :) Glad you found it, and good comment about the certification too, I'd intended to mention that! Quentin. On Wed, Feb 15, 2023 at 8:13 AM hurrikennyandopo ... <hurrikennyandopo@...> wrote:
