Three releases of Windows App Essentials: 23.04.2 (stable), 23.04.11 (beta), 20230328.0.0 (dev) #addonrelease

Hello everyone,

In addition to the release announcement, please read this post to the end as it includes important information on add-on release channels and requirements:

Windows App Essentials 23.04.2, 23.04.11, and March 28th dev build are now available:

  • 23.04.2: stable channel
  • 23.04.11: beta channel
  • 20230328.0.0: dev channel

Stable and beta channel builds are identical – 23.04.2/23.04.11 introduces beta channel and changes download link for dev channel builds to point to add-on store. March 28th dev build additionally includes changes destined for a stable version planned for later this year, along with changing Cortana response announcement handling.

To switch between channels, you must be using Add-on Updater 23.04.1 and later:

  1. Open NVDA menu/Preferences/Settings.
  2. Select Add-on Updater panel.
  3. Check or uncheck Windows App Essentials from prefer development releases channel to switch to dev/beta or stable, respectively.
  4. To move from stable channel to dev/beta channel, after checking Windows App Essentials from prefer development releases, press Tab to go to release channel list and select the appropriate channel (default: dev).
  5. To switch between dev and beta channel, select the release channel.
  6. To go from dev/beta to stable channel, uncheck Windows App Essentials from prefer development releases list.

For reference, here are descriptions of each Windows App Essentials add-on update channel:

  • Stable: for the general public, including consumers and businesses.
  • Beta: designed for power users and early adopters, this channel will include changes that will be released in future stable releases.
  • Dev: designed for developers and Windows Insiders, this channel will include changes that may or may not be included in beta and/or stable releases.

Stable and beta channel builds will support stable NVDA releases, whereas dev channel builds will be optimized to work better with prerelease NVDA builds such as alpha and beta releases. Of course I won’t forget about stable NVDA releases, so I will do everything I can to support stable NVDA releases in dev channel code (after all, most of dev channel code ends up in beta and stable releases). Also, stable and beta channel releases will declare oldest consumer level Windows 10/11 feature update (21H2) as minimum Windows version, whereas dev channel will work best with latest Windows 10/11 feature update (22H2) and latest Windows Insider Preview builds; eventually beta and stable channels will also require 22H2 but that will happen later.

Another important note, mostly for dev channel subscribers: today’s dev channel build will be the second to last build to run happily on NVDA 2022.4. Starting from a build coming later this week, NVDA 2023.1 will be required. 2023.1 requirement will also be in place for beta and stable channels, likely from May 2023 onwards (version jump).

Enjoy the new release(s).

Cheers,

Joseph

I took out the cultana, and news and other fuluffy clutter from win 10, since it was just annoying. Lets hope this does not upset any add ons. Grin.

Hi,

The latest version you'll get depends on the channel you are on, NVDA version (dev channel now reuiqres 2023.1 or later), and Windows version you've got (at least using Add-on Updater/community add-ons website source will not offer Windows App Essentials updates if using Windows10 releases earlier than 21H2).

Cheers,

Joseph
