unwanted speaking of incoming mail notification in thunderbird 102.9
Mary Otten
Since getting my pc back and running, I have this new problem with thunderbird when, if I have a message open and am reading, speech will be interrupted by a program announcing that incoming messages are being downloaded. I don't need or want that to happen. I'm using mozilla enhancements ad on, which I used before my Windows reinstallation. I never ever heard that message before, but I also don't recall the version of t-bird that I had. I know it was 32-bit and this one is 64. But that shouldn't make a difference. What, if anything, should I be looking for to get rid of this message.
This is not the "alert" that is on by default, which announces the user's name has received messages. I shut that off. This is something different. Mary |

Try the command NVDA key f5. That toggles report dynamic content
changes on and off. In this program, see if turning it off stops
the problem.

It will stay off no matter where you are until you turn it on. If you close NVDA, the setting is saved and it will always be off until you turn it on. It makes no difference in most programs if it is on or off, so you may want to turn it off and leave it off unless you find that you aren't getting information in a program or interface. For example, if you use command prompt, you have to turn it on to hear information spoken when it is sent to the screen. Gene On 3/30/2023 9:56 AM, Mary Otten wrote:

announcing that incoming messages are being downloaded.- It would help to have the exact message, or at least part of it. This could be something that's showing up in the status bar when a send-receive is being done, and if that's the case hiding the status bar would work, as would Gene's recommendation to have NVDA not report dynamic content changes. But without at least partial message text, it's difficult to know what it is that's being announced or where it originates. -- Brian - Virginia, USA - Windows 11 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 22H2, Build 22621; Office 2016, Version 16.0.15726.20188, 32-bit It is much easier to be critical than to be correct. ~ Benjamin Disraeli, 1804-1881 |

Also, profiles might help to control which programs this is on or off for. That said, there is a way to turn this off in Thunderbird, as Brian mentioned, I believe by disabling the status bar. That seems the preferable method, as dynamic content can be quite important in web browsers. Luke |

Yes, NVDA 5. Perhaps I should have mentioned profiles but I didn't
because I thought this setting made little difference to most
users.

Your comments, however, have caused me to reflect that when someone wants to know what a live region of a web site is reporting, dynamic content should be on. Gene On 3/30/2023 12:17 PM, Luke Davis

Brian's Mail list account
Yes, one pesky thing is that our local councils main home page and index has a running carousel of inaccessible slides, and as you're trying to cursor about the page you keep hearing Now showing slide x of y, which is irritating. I suggested to the web team that if they put a pause carousel near the start, it would be far less annoying, since at the its a button which is not a button but a link near the bottom. They of course did not get the problem at all.

Its a pity that this dynamic content toggle is not able to be page specific in browsers using the system just mentioned. Its odd because Amazon appear to have a carousel that only tells you its updated the content when you go there in the page. Brian -- bglists@...
