upper case V pronounced as "five

The Gamages

Hello,

I am using ther latest Windows ten and latest NVDA, when I type a capital V NVDA pronounces it as "five", I have changed the keyboard to no effect

If I read the line it sometimes reads the word correctly, but if I move letter by letter, upper case V is pronounced as "five".

Several instances of the problem are present in this message, but it does the same in Word, wordpad etc. The character appears correctly , it's just the way NVDA  pronounces it, Jaws doesn't have this problem

Any comments?  Thanks a lot.

Best Regards, Jim.

Hi Jim,

what speech synth are you using?

The synthesizer is interpreting the capitalised letter as a roman numeral.

Nermin

It may be something you have added to the speech dictionary or a problem with an add-on, though I doubt an add-on has anything to do with this.

I don't recall where the dictionary files are kept in the installed version of NVDA, if you are using the installed version.  Someone will likely tell you.
Change the dic end, I don't recall the proper word, of the file to bak.  Then close and run NVDA again.  See if the problem disappears.  If it does, it's something you added to the dictionary.

I've had the same issue while using Vocalizer Ava ML. But I've discovered that the spelling functionality checkbox in the speech settings has something to do with it. So, if it's checked, uncheck it. If it's unchecked, check it. The voice should speak the capital V properly after you adjust this setting. Alternatively, you could try a different voice. Others I've used don't have this quirk.

Hello Nermin,

I have changed the voice from Serina to Stephany and all is now pronounced correcvtly, it's a shame because I had become rather fond of Serina, [smile].

Thank you again for your help, and thank the others who offered comment.

Best Regards, Jim.

What synth are you using? This will actually matter, or at least, it's a troubleshooting step.

Yes until quite recently, VI as in visual Impairment used to say roman 6.

Its synth dependent from what I can tell, Espeak used to do this a lot, but at some stage it seemed to stop. Brian

Serena, quite an old voice, not her real name, she used to read for some publications, and often was bundled with Daniel.
