Which video software for nvda

Hettie

I spent a lot of time searching Google for an accessible video downloader that works with nvda.

I came accros Ummy Video Downloader  and it looks like a possibility but unfortunately it allows only 1 free download before you need to pay. The subscription price falls out of my monthly or once-off budget. The video I downloaded from Youtube was of a very high quality.

Any suggestions for a free app?

You are on the stable add-ons page.  You will see a link as you look down the page for add-ons under development.  You may use them if you wish but they may have bugs, being sort of like betas.

Legacy add-ons, as I understand it, and there is a link to them as well, are those that can be used with older versions of NVDA.  I'm not sure, but I don't think they will work with current versions.

If you go to the page I gave a link to earlier and move down the page using h for heading, you will move from add-on link to add-on link.

Hi Heddy,

Pontes Media Downloader does give you the option to download the full unconverted video from Youtube.  It also allows  conversion to MP3 and other audio formats.  I am totally blind myself and therefore I cannot make accurate analysis of just what quality of videos are downloaded.  By default, it downloads the video in MP4 format.  I think this may be a compressed form of the video, so if compressed video format is not good enough, maybe this won't work for you.

In any case, the download page for this app is:

Please be careful when downloading video converters. They tend to be
notorious for containing potentially unwanted programs (PUP's) or even
outright malware. I can't count the number of machines I've had to
repair over the years because of this very reason. If you do decide
you absolutely must have such, then please try ninite first

If not, then at least pay attention when installing & uncheck the
other offerings most of these try to present, but even so, that
doesn't always work. & Google does not screen these, so searching for
such programs there does not mean you'll necessarily get a
crapware-free app.

But you can set the program to download in MP4 and not convert the file.

Sometimes for some reason, a file you want to convert to MP3 may remain in the unconverted MP4 format. I'm not sure if I've seen that happen except when downloading using a playlist, but I have seen it happen.

HI Jackie,

FYI, Pontes does not have any spyware or Potentially Unwanted Programs that come along with it.  The one you have to be careful of is the FreeMake converter.  That used to be a good program, but in 2015, they introduced a bunch of Potentially Unwanted Programs including something called Security 360.  It was some sort of security program that was impossible to remove and was most probably some sort of spyware itself.  I don't know how many people got burned with that one.  Pontes is definitely good to go and I have been using it for years without any difficulty.

Ron, that's good to know. Even in cases where the program is great,
sometimes it gets distributed on other websites where it's loaded
w/crapware, & then it's not. So in a case like Pons, just make sure
you're at the real author's site.

What program is giving you the warning? and when do you get it? The program is very popular among blind people and a large number are using it. I've seen no reports of it containing a trojan or of the web site containing a trojan. A false posibive is by far the most likely conclusion unless you are saying the page itself, when it comes up brings up this warning. In that case, if it is the page and not at the time you follow the download link, then its possible the page has some sort of hacked advertising.

Just run it in Firefox with uBlock Origin and you'll be fine. It's
probably something on the page itself. I have it installed and have had
no issues with it.

Pontes is a program specifically made for blind people, not saying that
that exempts it from crapware, but it probably has a higher chance of
not having any than any mainstream converter.

Since I haven't seen any reports of such unwanted programs or malware and it is a popular program, a false positive is the logical and by far the more probable explanation.

Hmmm its not a virus.

It uses versions of ffmpeg and youtube dl both of which are opensource components.

The program runs on oracle java as its engine.

Its got an innosetup installer and thats about it.

Then again I am not surprised.

Microsoft flags just about anything everything from ccleaner to cdex could be a problem for some obscure reason.

Heck even nvda became malware at one time.

Lets face it, security companies don't like the blind especially antivirus makers.

The program that blocked it was Malwarebytes
It doesn’t even give an option to go through to the website for that website

Hi all.

Pontes Media is safe. A program don’t safe is, for example, Multi Extra, but the developer also created in 2016 an addon malicious for NVDA and this person is popular for this reason.

When I need download a video in audio format I use TCA Media Downloader. Is a program created by Peter Reina, in Python, but is only in Spanish, my native language. Is easy to use.

Regards.

False positives are not at all uncommon, though any time you get one proceeding with caution is appropriate.

Your best course of action when you get what you believe may be a false positive is to use the website virustotal.com to have the file or link scanned.  It's not unusual at all for a couple of odd engines to come back with false positives while the vast majority declare something clean.  If you've got between 0 and 10 of about 80 engines saying something is positive, they're probably giving false positives.  When something is really malicious a virustotal scan will "light up like a Christmas tree" with engines declaring an infection.

Truthfully, I didn't get any warnings when I went to the page using
Firefox. However, sometimes a website can be compromised w/o an
author's knowledge. I did scan the site using Sucuri's sitecheck tool
& found no evidence for that. The site does contain both secure &
insecure (mixed) content, & http traffic is not redirected to https,
so perhaps this is what Malwarebytes is flagging. Looks to me as
though the site hasn't been updated in a veyry long time, which also
leaves open the possibility of a compromise w/o the creator's
knowledge, but, again, I don't see evidence of that.

Hi Ron

I installed Pontes Media Downloader but at a loss as to how the program works. It shows the youtube file I want to download but I can't download it. Where can I find documentation or would you help me to understand the program?
