Win10 start menu search box keeps saying "suggestions are available"

Cyrille

Hello

Maybe we should all report it to Microsoft. Then they would understand that this notification is a degradation in the user experience, and hopefully remove it.

Cheers,

Cyrille

As of the past couple days, every time I invoke the start menu and start typing an application’s name, NVDA announces “suggestions are available,” cutting off the announcement of the actual app’s name. I’m guessing this is because of a recent NVDA update, Windows update or a combination of both, but I’m not sure. Is anyone else experiencing this and is there a way to make it stop? I’m well aware that when I type into the start menu it will show suggestions. I don’t need NVDA telling me that every time. Lol. Thanks.

I don't know the procedure for reporting problems to the Microsoft accessibility unit and I'm not saying that is the correct name but if enough people report the problem, it will be taken more seriously.

Here is a suggestion which is available.  (grin)  I found out something interesting.  First, the practical application:
If you are really in a hurry and don't want to hear the announcement, you can down arrow and up arrow very quickly as soon as you hear speech and the additional sentence won't be spoken.  Down arrow once, then up arrow once and you will just hear the suggestion.

Now, what I found out that caused me to realize you can do this:
I was playing with the start menu search.  Using NVDA and Windows 10, if I type the name of something if I use the read current line command, NVDA says suggestions are available every time before reading the name of the program.  But if I down arrow and then up arrow once to be where I was, reading the current line doesn't cause suggestions are available to be spoken.  I wonder what is going on from a programming point of view that the additional text disappears from the screen-reader's knowledge when you move away, then move back.

I find the eternal suggestions as one types off-putting and always have. It would be nice if some key could be held down while you are typing and the item in the list only announced when you let go, and this might also stop this annoying announcement too. Probably not practical, but would be good to have.

There is already a sound that NVDA makes when you move through
suggestions, and it's been this way for years in Win 10.

I know that it was discussed for win11 but some features are making it

Would be nice if that could be turned off or made into another tone or
somethhing.

It is a whooshing sound that plays and goes up when you enter suggestions and plays again when you leave suggestions, but this time it goes down.

I don't remember how, but I stopped it.  I don't see what value it has, doing the same thing as this unnecessary speech over and over again.

Thanks Bob. Mostly just confirming it wasn't just me, haha. I trust it
will be worked out in the next update, then. To be clear, NVDA still
ultimately announces the app name; you just have to listen to the
"suggestions are available" message first. Annoying but not a show stopper.

OK the solution at least for NVDA is to add suggestions are available,
to the default dic. Note the comma after the word available is to be
included in the dic entry. Just leave the replace with blank. I think
Gean made this suggestion as well.

The bad thing about suggestions is that they make you waste time listening to things that are not worth it if you already know their functions, and that causes delays in one's activities.

z9zyt0@...

It's a real problem that NVDA adds features and doesn't allow turning them off, just like in document formats, that it doesn't allow turning off all descriptions in document formats.
They should get to work making it possible to disable all new features, instead of fixing things that aren't even worth it, like putting security patches.

The Feedback Hub.   That or call (or otherwise reach out to) Microsoft Windows & Office Accessibility Support.

Everything can be reported through the Feedback Hub, and accessibility is one of the categories (or subcategories, I can't specifically recall which).

Thank you Joseph for this information.  I was stumped, beings the first message on this said it was because of the NVDA update.  I updated NVDA to March 2, several days ago.  This just showed up late yesterday.  I was guessing it was from Micro Soft, but hadn't worked enough with it to make sure.

Windows F is your friend.  No, I really mean that, leave feedback for the Microsoft team, then leave a link here, and we can upvoat and put our own comments if applicable. I might do this, or at least search for it later after work.

I agree, I wish that can be turned off if you don’t want that announcement. There should be that option for both windows ten and eleven.  I don’t see anything wrong with it. But there should be an option to have that turned off or left on.

Well, since I wanted to see how to pick accessibility related feedback in Feedback Hub, I've created an issue for this.  See: "Suggestions available" announcement is an impediment to accessibility in Windows Search & Start Menu

For the record, "Accessibility" is one of the primary category choices in the Feedback hub.  That being said, if the complaint is about accessibility in a specific program, rather than Windows in general, you'll probably want to use the primary category appropriate to the program with which you're having an accessibility issue.

Great, so the TLDR here for anyone just joining the thread seems to be:
1. Submit feedback to Microsoft accessibility
2. Functionally disable the announcement using the default speech dictionary

BTW sorry I missed the original thread about this. Admittedly I find both the email list and the groups.IO site a bit unwieldy so I wasn’t aware of the original topic. Thanks again, all.

A question for someone who can see the screen, does the words suggestions are available show on the screen? If so even with someone who is sighted what good does the announcment provide?
